Ood liver oil is oil extracted from cod livers. Depending on your environmental and geographical location, it may not be a good idea to use cod liver oil as a fish oil supplement because it contains very high levels of vitamin A and D. High doses of vitamin A can cause headache, dry skin, itching, and liver damage. Taking too much cod liver oil can also be detrimental because of potential overdosing of vitamin D. Consuming too much vitamin D can make you very ill. Direct sunlight on the skin is one way the body produces vitamin D. Symptoms from taking too much vitamin D include excessive thirst, a metallic taste, bone pain, tiredness, sore eyes, itching skin, vomiting, diarrhea, a need to urinate, and muscle problems. Getting too much sunlight will not give you too much vitamin D. But taking too much cod liver oil or other vitamins and supplements containing vitamin D can result in problems. Because the body naturally produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, a common way to benefit from both oils while avoiding a vitamin D overdose is to take cod liver oil during the winter, and fish oil during the summer. On the other hand, the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is considered by many to be strongly understated. In 2005 researchers have found that Vitamin D can dramatically lower the risk of developing different types of cancers. In fact, taking the right amount of Vitamin D can cut the chances in half of getting breast, ovarian, or even colon cancer.
